Launch of Book: Ernesto Leal at Tasneem Gallery, 2011 – 2024
Dear all,
Hope you have had a good summer. World events have certainly been challenging and within that context, art gives us the possibility to reflect, debate … and maybe more. Tasneem Gallery takes great pride in inviting you to the following event:
LAUNCH OF BOOK
ERNESTO LEAL AT TASNEEM GALLERY, 2011 – 2024
Includes the essay by Rosa Martínez, ‘Are there too many words?’
Date: 19 September 2025
Time: 19.00 to 21.30
Place: Tasneem Gallery (entrance on Calle Castellnou 51,
Les Tres Torres, 08017 Barcelona)
Ernesto Leal (b. Havana 1971), explores the spoken word and the written text — how they are used, misused, subverted. His exploration, carried out through many different visual media, makes us stop and pause.
Inundated as we are with narratives, mixed meanings and images, Leal’s proposition has never been so relevant. For this reason we thought it important to gather together in one publication the discourses presented in the three Leal exhibitions held to date at Tasneem Gallery. It also allows us to appreciate his visual poetry.
As Rosa Martínez writes, “This attention to language, to rhetorical and signifying strategies, might place him in the tradition of the purest Conceptual Art, although the physical formalisations of his visual games could similarly ground his works in a poetics of delicacy that leads us to abstraction and visual poetry.”

The Fly was first performed by Htein Lin for his fellow political prisoners. Later filmed in a single handheld take. In Myanmar´s art history it is considered an absurd masterpiece. As described by the Berlin Biennale……´Like a prisoner absorbing the force that once oppressed him, Htein Lin turns limitation into liberation. Despite relentless persecution, he discovers profound freedom within the focused space of his mind´.
