Sara Huete
Sara Huete Exhibition at Tasneem Gallery
Press Release
October 2025
Sara Huete (Santander 1958), one of Cantabria’s best artists, returns to Barcelona with her new exhibition, “Las Mujeres Cuentan” (Women Count), at the Tasneem Gallery on November 6th. The exhibition will be open to the press from 12:30 p.m. on that day until December 5th.
Sara Huete nurtures a powerful image of women, while working extensively with collage, playfully juxtaposing image/ text, social message/ irony, vintage/ current events, prints/ objects.
In the exhibit, she presents 20 collages from several of her artistic series. at the gallery. One series is dedicated to female Surrealist artists, some quite familiar, such as Dora Maar and Remedios Varo, and others “yet to be discovered”, such as Toyen and Kati Horna. This tribute to female Surrealists coincides with other recent exhibitions in Barcelona, such as the one about filmmaker Germaine Dulac, currently at the Museu Tàpies, and last month´s exhibit at the Ethnological Museum on Maya Deren.
Other works deal with our multiple daily adventures, such as “Por el monte las sardinas” (On the Mountain the Sardines), “Salirse del cuadro” (Getting Out of the Frame), “La diaria sorpresa de un nuevo sabor” (The Daily Surprise of a New Flavor), y “En casa del psicoanalista” (At the Psychoanalyst’s Home). Powerful female figures are represented in “La mujer calculadora” (The Calculating Woman), “Dafne”, or “Mujer de Letras” (Woman of Letters).
Tasneem has produced a video for the exhibition, which is an interview with Sara Huete. We see her in Santander, working at her studio, with some of her pieces, and with testimonials from one of her collectors. This video showcases the ingenious ways in which she finds the ideas and materials that she uses to create her pieces, and the combination of spontaneity and deep reflection that she applies throughout her work.
Gabriel Rodriguez, a writer and art critic from Cantabria, tells us in this text that he wrote for the exhibition, titled “The Sweet Charm of Irony”:
“These are works filled with surrealist humor, the kind that raises its head to laugh at conventions, to assault the established conceptual order, to explode into subtleties that become fundamental. Humor as a surprise, as a leap laden with suggestions that provokes new connections, that opens marginal territories, takes shape in a timeless image.”
“These are perennial works that, from the rigorous timelessness of dreams, offer a rigorous relevance of emotions.”
“In her work, Sara Huete similarly establishes connections between three seemingly separate lines of thought: the territory of the real object, the imaginary space of photography or engraving, and the symbolic mastery of language.”
“Before the unsuspecting passerby, a crater rises in the imperfect garden of demons playing to reveal the fragility of our way of knowing, of our relationship with everyday life.”
Sara has had numerous exhibitions throughout Spain, and her works are in important collections. She has exhibited many times successfully in Barcelona, at the Berini and Alonso Vidal galleries.
