Naci\u00f3 en 1949 en Kumamoto, Jap\u00f3n. Tanabe ha vivido y trabajado durante 20 a\u00f1os en Sitges, un peque\u00f1o pueblo situado en las afueras de Barcelona. Con una carrera establecida e internacionalmente reconocida, ha sido invitado a participar en las ediciones del 2007 y 2009 de la Bienal de Florencia. Se licenci\u00f3 en la Universidad de Waseda en Ciencias Pol\u00edticas en 1972, y en 1974 obtuvo un master en Anatom\u00eda Humana en la Universidad de Bellas Artes de Tokio.
